Elsea Moon began the way most small things do — quietly, and without much of a plan. A note kept about an afternoon that went well. A photograph of a table laid for play. A list of the toys that were still being used a year after they arrived.

It turned into this: a small journal and a carefully kept edit of finds, for anyone making a home and raising little ones in it.

What this is

Three things, mostly. Ideas for unhurried afternoons with children, because the best ones usually need far less than you would think. Notes on making a house feel like a home, through what is on the table rather than what is on the walls. And a short list of things worth bringing home — chosen because we would happily own them ourselves, not because they were sent to us.

How we choose things

One question, applied to everything: will this still be in use in a year?

That rules out a great deal. It rules out most things with batteries, almost everything licensed, and anything that can only be used one correct way. What is left tends to be simple, well made, and happy to be handed down — wood, wool, clay, linen, and books with real illustration.

We would rather recommend four things we are certain about than forty we are not.

Saying hello
